Our History

AC&R Insulation Co, Inc. was founded in 1907 by Frank H Shipe(center).

The business orginally installed pipe and boiler covering, as well as commercial roofing.

Over the years it expanded into the commercial and residential markets both in installation and as a distributor and supplier of a full range of insulation products. In the installation business, AC&R is the nation's oldest insulation contractor.

Kelso Shipe, the eldest of Frank's two sons, first entered the family business in 1946, after serving in World War II. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, he soon took charge of estimating and contract sales.

In 1949, Walter Shipe, also a WWII vet, joined his brother and father in the business. His degree in Business from Gettysburg College allowed him to focus on the administrative and financial aspects of the company.

With their father's guidance and encouragement, the two brothers melded their talents. In 1956, following an active day at the office, Frank Shipe died in his sleep. The business was left to his two sons. Kelso assumed the title of President and Treasurer, while Walter became Vice President and Secretary.

Over the years, the company expanded into applied industrial products for commercial apartments, hotels, office buildings and federal projects. In addition, AC&R moved heavily into commercial/residential insulation, first using rockwool and later fiberglass.

Today, AC&R continues to focus on residential and commercial installations, fireproofing, air control, air barrier systems, and the sale of industrial materials.

The Family tradition is being carried forward by Walter's daughter, Ginny Cameron, who joined the company in 1977. She holds a B.A. from Sweet Briar College, where she received highest honors in Sociology. Upon Kelso's retirement in 1988, Ginny assumed the role of President. She has been active in industry organizations, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of ICAA and Insulate America. In 2001, she became the first female President of ICAA.

In 1998, Scott Cameron, Frank's great grandson, joined the company and continues the family legacy. In the summer of 2007, Scott started the spray foam division of A.C&R. Andrew Cameron, Ginny's youngest son, graduated in 2005 from Roanoke College with a degree in Business Administration. He joined the business shortly after his graduation and is currently involved in residential sales.

Currently, three generations of family serve to meet your needs.
